SIU investigating ‘overnight incident’ that left 61-year-old woman with severe burns

The province’s police watchdog is investigating an incident that left a 61-year-old woman with life-threatening injuries.

According to a press release by the SIU, police were called to an apartment complex on Saranac Boulevard near Lawrence Avenue West and Bathurst Street around 3 a.m. Saturday morning.

Investigators stated the calls were in regards to residents showing concern for a woman in the building.

Several officers, including those from the Emergency Task Force, got into an altercation with the victim inside one of the apartment units.

The woman suffered serious injuries as well as severe burns to a significant portion of her body.

She was later rushed to hospital and is now in an intensive care unit.

The organization is an arm’s-length agency that investigates reports of death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault where police were involved.
