Winnipeg police bomb squad responds to suspicious package Monday afternoon

WINNIPEG — A heavy police presence, including the bomb squad, gathered at a hotel parking lot on Century Street Monday afternoon after a suspicious package was found behind a business in the area.

Police received the report around 3 p.m. and closed Century St. between Wellington and Saskatchewan avenues. Nearby businesses were evacuated as a precaution.

The bomb squad could be seen from Global’s SkyView-1 helicopter unloading their robot just before 6 p.m.

The robot can be seen carrying an item out of site around 7:30 p.m. A loud boom was heard in the area shortly after.

Police said they “neutralized” the suspicious package but it’s unclear what it was. The investigation is ongoing.

Century Street is expected to be reopened by 9 p.m. and police said they’ll be leaving the area shortly after.
