Police said an incident involving a firearm at the Edmonton Law Courts building Friday morning was not criminal in nature.
Police were called to a weapons complaint just after 10 a.m.
A man was taken to hospital with serious injuries after a gun went off in an armoury locker. Alberta Justice and Solicitor General later said an employee with the Sheriffs branch was the person taken to hospital in stable condition.
Alberta Justice said the incident happened in a secure, non-public area of the law courts building and there is no danger to the public.
The ministry said counselling and trauma support services are being offered to courthouse staff and employees with the Sheriffs branch.
“Our thoughts are with the injured sheriff and his family, and we are ensuring support is available to them,” read a statement from the ministry.
Occupational Health and Safety is investigating the incident.
Earlier this month, police were called to the provincial court in downtown Edmonton after the alleged assault of two inmates. Officers said two inmates were assaulted in an inmate holding area while four inmates were waiting to be processed.
