GALLERY: Feral rabbit population booming in Calgary

Canmore isn’t the only community overrun with bunnies.

The population of feral rabbits is booming in several communities in Calgary, including Bridgeland and Erlton.

Some residents and business owners are complaining the rabbits have been digging up gardens and even chewing through the foundations of buildings.

Most of them are the offspring of escaped pets.

The city says it’s up to the Calgary Humane Society to deal with the problem.

Christie Thompson of the Humane Society says the organization has rounded up pesky rabbits in the past, with the help of the group “Pound Rescue”.

However, she says there are no plans for a roundup in the near future, and that it’s up to Calgarians to take the initiative.

“Here at the Humane Society we don’t do stray pickups. People are welcome to come and use our live traps and they are able to bring those live animals to us.”

Canmore recently backed away from a plan to cull hundreds of feral rabbits in the area and instead agreed to allow a rescue group to relocate some of the bunnies to animal sanctuaries.

Canmore officials say they wish Calgary well, but don’t have any advice to offer.
