2 dead after semi and SUV collide on Highway 16 east of Jasper

Two people were killed in a head-on collision between a semi truck and an SUV in Jasper National Park on Wednesday evening.

Jasper RCMP responded to the collision on Highway 16 near Talbot Lake at 7:45 p.m. MT.

Police said the driver and passenger of the SUV died on scene. The man driving the tractor trailer was taken to hospital via ground ambulance.

Video of the aftermath of the crash showed a vehicle engulfed in flames.

An RCMP collision analyst was called to the scene, and the crash remains under investigation. The cause is not known.

The Yellowhead was closed overnight, with eastbound traffic diverted at the Jasper townsite and westbound traffic diverted at Highway 40 near Hinton.

The highway reopened early Thursday morning.

Police did not release any further information about the victims.

According to a tweet from Alberta Transportation’s 511 Alberta account, the crash occurred about 20 kilometres east of Jasper.
