WINNIPEG — Manitoba born NHL star Jonathan Toews was announced as honourary chair of Dakota Futures Campaign Wednesday morning. It’s the same facility where the Chicago Blackhawks captain started out.
The Jonathan Toews foundation donated $1,000,000.00 to Dakota Community Centre for its capital campaign. That’s the largest private donation to date.
Construction is underway on the massive undertaking where Dakota CC is being transformed into a brand new sports, health, wellness and fitness facility. The grand opening is slated for fall of 2017.
“Off the ice Jonathan has emerged as a champion of fitness and healthy eating,” said Michele Augert, CEO of Dakota Community Centre. “Jonathan has never forgotten where he grew up.”

Family members of Toews were caught in northern Ontario because of weather, his brother David Toews was there to address the crowd.
“It’s just a great opportunity and we are super humbled and grateful for the opportunity to be part of this,” said David Toews Wednesday. “We are really happy and blessed to be a part of this.”
