The Quebec Transport Ministry (MTQ) gets more noise complaints about construction on the Turcot Interchange than on any other subject.
That’s why it has started a novel pilot project — changing the “beep” noise that construction vehicles make when they back up to more of a “whooshing” sound.
Since Turcot work continues at night, the noise is a constant issue.
Sarah Bensadoun, spokesperson for the MTQ, said vehicles were fitted with the new sound systems a month ago, as part of a pilot project.
She said:
“It makes more of a blank sound.”
The cost of retrofitting the new vehicles will fold into the project’s current budget of more than $1 billion. Officials unveiled the project at a citizens’ meeting in St-Henri.
Officials are still grappling with two other major Turcot complaints: dust from the work and traffic woes.
