It’s a documentary about following your dreams. Told through the sport of boxing, the film inspires people to pursue their passion even when the odds are against them.

“It is an inspiring story of three amazing women that go against all odds to persevere and make their dreams come true,” filmmaker Ameesha Joshi said. “We want it to resonate with people, we want to send the message that a woman can do anything she wants anywhere in the world no matter what.”

Called “With this Ring”, the 90-minute documentary is about women boxers from a country people don’t normally associate with female boxing champions, India.

“India has top women boxers in the world but nobody knows them, they don’t know their stories,” said Joshi.

Intrigued, she decided to chronicle the lives of three boxers focusing on the challenges the female athletes were up against.

“In terms of the criticisms and the societal pressures that are placed on women, ” Joshi said. “For a woman to choose to pursue boxing for a passion and a sport and career is far form acceptable by traditional Indian standards.”

The film took 10 years to complete. Bringing it to Kelowna is special for Joshi because her mom and step dad live in the Okanagan.

“We are thrilled,” Paul Cleland said. “We have been waiting for 10 years for this showing, we are very proud of her, very, very proud.”

There is also another Okanagan connection. Award winning editor Jackie Dzuba, who took 200 hours of footage and edited down to 90 minutes, is based in Kelowna.

“With this Ring” screens in Kelowna on Monday, Nov. 28 at the Mary Irwin Theatre at Kelowna’s Rotary Centre for the Arts. Admission is free. The film starts at 7:30 p.m. Click here for more information.
