WINNIPEG — Starting next year, anyone in driver’s education in Manitoba will learn how to get behind the wheel on gravel roads.
This move comes nearly a month after a Manitoba teenager, Tyler Klassen, was killed in a car crash on a gravel road. He died just three days after getting his license.
Gravel road driving is part of the Manitoba Public Insurance’s (MPI) Driver’s Manual and in-class education. A spokesperson told Global News they try to cover gravel driving as much as possible after covering essentials, like highway driving. However, the training is not mandatory.
Starting in September 2017, every student will have to take gravel road training as part of the driver’s education curriculum.

Parents are also encouraged to take an active role in the development of a young driver, especially when it comes to driving on gravel roads, MPI says.
