According to Yvon Daunais from the Montreal Fire Department, the fire started in the bedroom of one of the fourth-floor apartments due to what he called a smoking device.

A 45-year-old tenant was transported to hospital with second-degree burns on his back.

According to Daunais, the man is considered to be in serious condition in the intensive care unit of Jean-Talon Hospital as he inhaled smoke.

All tenants have been allowed back into the building.

The building sustained about $30,000 in damages.
