Ottawa police said they have arrested a “male young offender” after several religious institutions in the city defaced with hateful graffiti over the past week.
Police said through a statement that the suspect was arrested in the city’s west end Saturday morning.

On Friday, racist graffiti was found at the Parkdale United Church and the Ottawa Muslim Association.
Earlier in the week, similar graffiti was found at two synagogues as well as the teaching centre and home of a Jewish woman.

News of the arrest was welcomed by Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, who tweeted his thanks to the city’s police service after a solidarity gathering against racism.
The suspect has been charged with six counts of uttering threats to cause death, six counts of mischief to religious buildings, six counts of breaching youth probation and two counts of dangerous weapons.
He is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 30.
