Bridgeland neighbourhood home furniture store Eisenbergs’ Fine Furniture has announced it will be closing after 97 years in the business.
“It’s somewhat heartbreaking to make this decision,” Stan Eisenberg said.
Located at 77 Edmonton Trail N.E., the store is a division of Alberta Furniture Co. Ltd. It offers items for bedrooms, sofas, loveseats, chairs, dining rooms, home theatre options along with bedding and accessories. It also offers complimentary interior design and space-planning services.
Eisenbergs’ is currently advertising a “going out of business” sale.

“You hear the vacancy rates rising and rising,” Eisenberg said, referring to downtown Calgary. “And a lot of them were our customers.”
The furniture store has been around since 1919.
Stan Eisenberg’s grandfather bought the company in 1953, when it was called Alberta Furniture and located across the street.
Stan’s father took it over in the 1960s and then in 1991, Eisenbergs’ Fine Furniture in Bridgeland was born.
Loyal customer Carol Beckel said she is disappointed to see the store go.
“I’m sad about it. It’s been a Calgary icon,” Beckel said. “The days of this over-the-top decorating–I think it’s gone by the wayside, because people just can’t afford it.”
Eisenberg said this downturn isn’t like the others.
“Now we’re in year two and we don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. People aren’t going to always buy it, if you don’t feel good about tomorrow, you can always make do with that sofa for another year.”
Eisenberg said his family is doing this on their own terms, by closing slowly. The store will sell furniture at reduced prices for the next few months before closing for good.
