60 people laid off by Whistler Blackcomb months after friendly takeover by U.S. company

Sixty positions are to be eliminated at Whistler Blackcomb after this year’s ski season is over.

The changes are what the company calls its future organizational structure under the new owner – Vail Resorts.

Vail Resorts announced a $1.4-billion deal to take over Whistler Blackcomb in August.

The changes will not take effect until May, 1, 2017.

In a letter sent out to all Whistler Blackcomb staff on Wednesday, the company said the vast majority of Whistler Blackcomb employees will not be impacted.

The jobs affected are in IT, finance and accounting, marketing and sales because of what the company calls duplication between Whistler and Vail Resorts’s corporate office in Colorado.

Neither mountain operations nor guest services are expected to be affected.
