A 38-year-old Ontario woman is facing multiple charges after police said she fatally struck a dog with her vehicle in Mississauga over the weekend.
Peel Regional Police said the accused was driving on Duford Drive around noon on Nov. 12 near Heartland Town Centre when she stopped to wave at a man and his dog to cross the street.
Global News spoke to the victim, who said he lost a family member on Saturday.
The victim says his dog, Shadow, was a nine-year-old Cavalier King Charles spaniel.
He had taken Shadow for a walk. When they went to cross the road near the family home, he said stopped by the roadside to allow the woman driving the vehicle to pass.

“I want to make sure if she has stopped or she is moving before I cross the road,” he said.
“So that’s why I looked at her. So when I saw she waved at me, then I think it’s a signal to walk through. So you never thought of something mischievous.”

The victim said when he and Shadow began to cross the road, the woman accelerated her vehicle and turned it toward them.
“I jumped back but because he moves slow, and then I couldn’t pull him back in time. And then he was hit by the car and then I saw the car run over at least his back leg,” he said.
Shadow later died of his injuries at the scene.

The woman was arrested on Nov. 14 and charged with dangerous operation of motor vehicle, killing or injuring animals and assault with a weapon.
She appeared in court on November 17 and was released on $10,000 bail. Conditions of her release include that she must live with her mother, have no contact with the alleged victim, she must remain in the province and she cannot drive a vehicle or have car keys in her possession.
