Topless women no longer forbidden at Taboo sex shows in Alberta

The Taboo Naughty but Nice Sex Show is being held in Calgary Nov. 10 to 13, 2016. TabooShow.com

Visitors to the Taboo Naughty but Nice Sex Show will be able to watch topless performers for the first time ever.

Previously, women taking to the stage at the event’s three Alberta tour dates weren’t allowed to expose their bare breasts under the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC) nude entertainment policy.

However, the AGLC altered its definition of “nude” in November 2015 after it was argued that having different rules for women and men in didn’t align with the Canadian Human Rights Act.

“It came down to the issue of female versus male in an unclothed state during entertainment,” AGLC President and CEO Bill Robinson said. “This was specifically brought forward as an issue to us.”

The amendment means nude entertainment is now defined only by the exposure of genitals (male or female) and sets the stage for women to be able to go topless.

Taboo managing partner Terra Connors said it’s not a huge change, as performers would use pasties or nipple covers in previous years, but it will enhance the show.

“For us, in this industry and at this show, it’s not really anything out of the ordinary,” she said.

Connors added that while women are now free to expose their bare breasts, it doesn’t mean all performers will.

“It’s their right to exercise that option, but they don’t have to,” she said.

The change also means it’s not just female performers who can bare their naked breasts; Connors said attendees and exhibitors are also able to.

The sex show will be held in Calgary this weekend, Edmonton Nov. 17 to 20 and Red Deer March 17 to 19, 2017.

2016 marks the 16th year for the Calgary and Edmonton sex shows. Red Deer’s upcoming event will be it’s 11th.
