Alberta Wildrose party votes down parents’ inclusion in all education issues, but still has parents as primary decision-makers

Wildrose party members in Alberta have overwhelmingly voted down a motion to include parents in all issues related to a child’s education, including sexual identity or identification.

Speaking to defeat the motion at the party’s AGM in Red Deer, Wildrose MLA Derek Fildebrandt said Wildrose policy already makes clear the importance of parental rights and choice in education.

He said passing such a motion could be viewed by the party’s opponents as trying to out gay kids.

Wildrose members made a number of changes to their policy book on the final day of the meeting, including voting to abandon the NDP’s graduated income tax system and supporting free parking for the first two hours at health facilities.
