Gaz Metro crews have plugged a gas leak near the Bell Centre in downtown Montreal.
A spokesperson for the utility company said they received a 911 call at 8:17 a.m. Sunday reporting a leak near the Bell Centre at 1000 de la Montagne St. in downtown Montreal.
The work to plug the seal was done by 12:40 p.m, according to Catherine Houde with Gaz Metro.
Montreal firefighters established a security perimeter Sunday morning and 22 intersections were affected, Montreal fire department chief of operations Sylvain Legros told Global News. The perimeter has since been lifted.
Hydro-Quebec also cut the power to certain areas of the downtown core and over 250 customers were without electricity for a few hours.
Legros said workers doing excavation work on the street hit a 4″ conduit, which caused the leak.
While the leak is no longer a concern, crews were still working to fix the broken gas main Sunday afternoon.
The fire department who was monitoring air quality said no evacuations were necessary.
The metro remained operational, but transit users at the Lucien L’Allier station were being directed away from the safety perimeter earlier in the day.
Houde told Global News that work to repair the gas main could last a few hours, but that all roads which were closed off due to the incident have since been reopened to traffic.
