Police searching for driver after car crashes off bridge into Toronto harbour

Police are searching for the driver of a vehicle that crashed into a guard rail and drove off of a bridge into the water in Toronto’s Port Lands area.

Toronto police responded to a call near Cherry Street and Polson Street just before 4 p.m. Thursday, after a car was seen crashing into the Lake Ontario harbour.

Toronto Fire Platoon Chief Kevin Aucoin said a female driver was seen in the vehicle before it made impact with the water. He added the vehicle was located just before 6 p.m., after it was spotted on the surface before being submerged under more than seven metres of water.

Aucoin said cyclist passing by dove into the water to help the driver, but could not confirm if the driver was still trapped in the vehicle.

Paramedics said the man who jumped into the water has been transported to hospital for treatment of hypothermia. The water temperature at the time was estimated to be about 15 C.

Marine units and firefighters are on scene and paramedics said no information on the number of occupants is yet known.

Investigators said no one has yet been recovered from the vehicle but police divers from Toronto were assisting in the search.

Cherry Street is closed southbound from Commissioners Street until further notice and police said they are interviewing witness for more information.
