The earthquake that struck off the B.C. coast of Haida Gwaii was felt across the province, but residents in the community of Masset were very close to the epicentre.
Resident Elisa Schatz was at a family dinner when they started to feel the shaking.
“Everyone started to panic because it lasted a lot longer than any other earthquakes we’ve felt here in the past,” said said.

Schatz said residents were warned about a possible tsunami when the sirens went off, and that is when people headed for higher ground.
“Everyone did the evacuation properly,” she said.
The earthquake hit Saturday night, and was the largest B.C. has experienced in decades.
The epicentre was 17-km below ground, and about 200-km south-southwest of Prince Rupert.
It was followed by several smaller aftershocks.
So far, no damage or injuries have been reported.
