Hundreds of left-wing Filipino activists burned a mock U.S. flag and demanded President Rodrigo Duterte take punitive action against police officers who rammed a van on some of them in a brutal dispersal at the American Embassy on Wednesday.

Protest leader Piya Malayao and other left-wing activists marched three kilometres to the presidential palace in Manila on Friday to condemn the violent police action and seek justice for those injured, including herself.
“That action coming from the police could have really taken a lot of lives from our people,” said Malayao. “That attack is really meant to kill our people.”

Malayao, who was hit by the van, walked with a crutch, with her right leg bandaged.
“We are also filling a letter, we are sending a letter to the office of the president seeking for justice and accountability for what has happened, particularly in the US embassy dispersal,” she said.

Police officials have removed nine officers from their posts, including one who rammed the police van into the protesters.
Police say the protesters had no rally permit and attacked officers.
