A convicted Calgary killer — who is also wanted on Canada-wide warrants — has resurfaced, but he has yet to be arrested.
Dean Commanda killed and dismembered one of his closest friends, Chad Largy.
Commanda was sentenced to a nine-year-and-six-month sentence that began in February 2007 for the manslaughter death of Largy. He was also convicted of indignity to a dead body and assault with a weapon.
The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) issued a Canada-wide warrant for Commanda on July 28, 2016, and he’s been on the run ever since. Now, he’s popped up on social media — hiding in plain sight.
“It is kind of mind boggling to think so you ditched your parole but you’re not trying to hide,” Chad Largy’s sister Miranda Fyfe told Global News Tuesday.
According to a Facebook profile, Commanda is working as a tattoo artist in Winnipeg.
He posts regularly including selfies and his day-to-day activities. But more concerning to his victim’s family, are several threatening posts, including one from Tuesday morning.
“Many wanna kill me and I can’t wait to die when I see them bi—s who threatened me and got shot the f–k up they dead. Calgary” one post reads.
Fyfe calls the posts sickening.
“It’s just him getting to live his life and obviously living his life in the same type of fashion he was before any of this stuff went down,” Fyfe said.
In July 2014, the Parole Board of Canada noted Commanda was a high risk to reoffend. Documents said he presented an “undue risk to society.” The board also expressed concern about “substance abuse and violence.” Several of his latest Facebook posts talk about illicit drug use and partying.
On Tuesday the CSC confirmed the Canada-wide warrant for Commanda remains in effect. It was only through our Global News story that officials became aware that Commanda has resurfaced online.
“CSC appreciates any assistance from members of the public regarding any information on an offender who is unlawfully at large,” the CSC said in an email to Global News. “The information on Dean Commanda’s recent social media postings has been shared with CSC staff.”
But Commanda’s victim’s family wants action.
“I would like to see him reprimanded, put back in prison,” Fyfe said.
“It is a joke, it’s a slap in my face, my mom’s face and my whole family.”
CSC told Global News they “will continue to work with police to apprehend this unlawfully at large offender.”
