Ed Whitlock, 85, smashes world marathon record at Toronto Waterfront race

A Milton, Ont., man claimed a world record during the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon on Sunday, posting the fastest run in the 85-90 age category.

Ed Whitlock, known as “The Master,” shattered the world mark, running three hours 56 minutes and 38 seconds. The previous record was four hours, 34 minutes, 55 seconds.

The 85-year-old holds 36 world records from the road and track.

Whitlock joked at the post-race news conference about the pressure to break another.

“I don’t want to disgrace myself, I suppose,” said Whitlock.

When asked the age of his teal running singlet and scuffed running shoes, Whitlock said he couldn’t remember.

“They’re well-aged,” he said, prompting laughter.

Before the race, Whitlock said injuries kept him out of competition last year.

“My chronic problem is my knees,” he said. “Somehow on occasion I get running in a long groove and they flare up and start to hurt. The only thing I can do that seems to get rid of it is to take a rest.”

Toronto marathoners also witnessed another world record fall on Sunday, as Canadian Calum Neff broke the record for running with a stroller, pushing his four-year-old daughter, Alessandra, to a time of two hours, 31 minutes and 26 seconds. Four Canadians ran the race faster than him — without pushing a stroller.

He recently broke the half-marathon stroller mark running with a younger daughter.
