Slain Calgary Stampeder Mylan Hicks to be honoured by Michigan State Saturday

Calgary Stampeder Mylan Hicks, who was shot to death at a local nightclub 12 days ago, will be honoured by his former university during a Saturday football game.

“Michigan State will honor Mylan Hicks with his #6 at midfield in Spartan Stadium for this Saturday’s game vs. BYU,” the American school’s Spartan Football team tweeted Thursday.

The CFL shared the tweet Friday, pointing to the Stamps account for more information. The Calgary team encouraged those interested to contribute to MSU’s Mylan Hicks Memorial Scholarship, named as a tribute to the Detroit native.

One of Hicks’ sisters, Kimberly Hicks, told Global News his funeral was held in Michigan Friday.

Hicks died in the early morning hours of Sept. 25 during a shooting at the Marquee Beer Market in southeast Calgary, hours after the team won against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The 23-year-old was a defensive back on the practice roster for the Stamps and in his first CFL season. He was celebrating with teammates following a 36-34 home win.

Before joining the Stampeders, Hicks attended Michigan State University on a scholarship and played cornerback, safety and linebacker.

After graduating with his bachelor’s degree in psychology, Hicks signed as an undrafted free agent with the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers in 2015.

Nelson Tony Lugela, 19, has been charged with second-degree murder in Hicks’ death.
