Photo of Oilers’ captains gets #OilersBoyBandNames trending in Canada

The big Edmonton Oilers news on Wednesday was that 19-year-old Connor McDavid had been named team captain, but a photo of four players launched a humorous hashtag trend.

The team shared a photo of McDavid and the three alternate captains – Milan Lucic, Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins – on Twitter.

Observers, inspired by the tone of the photo showing the four young men strolling out of a fancy room in Rogers Place, started posting boy band name suggestions.

Some of the names being recommended were flattering or focused on the age of the leadership group.

Edmonton hasn’t qualified for the playoffs since 2006 and was last in the Western Conference last season despite the notable additions of McDavid, McLellan, and goalie Cam Talbot.

The hashtag “oilersboybandnames” was trending in Canada on Wednesday.
