An 18-year-old man is facing several charges following an alleged assault in a University of British Columbia student residence on Tuesday morning.
Thamer Almestadi has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.
University RCMP officers were called to the 2500-block of West Mall at 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 4 after getting a report of a suspect being held down by a man.
Although police are in the early stages of the investigation, they said it appears the suspect was caught and held down by a Good Samaritan following the alleged assault of a woman.
Police said the victim was taken to the hospital following the attack. The name of the female victim has not been released and a publication ban has been placed on this case.
Almestadi appeared in Richmond Provincial Court on Wednesday morning.
He will remain in custody until his next court appearance on Oct. 11.
