The man accused of killing Calgary Stampeder Mylan Hicks made his first court appearance on Friday.
Nelson Lugela is charged with second-degree murder. He appeared in court via CCTV from the Calgary Remand Centre.
Hicks, a 23-year-old defensive back who was on the football team’s practice roster, was shot outside the Marquee Beer Market early Sunday morning.
Police said the shooting happened after an altercation involving several people inside the nightclub spilled outside after it closed.

The family of the accused was in court for the appearance and spoke to the media afterwards.
“I believe there’s someone out there. That he’s the one that did it – but they aren’t telling the truth.”
Flora broke down as she spoke. “He told me I don’t remember what happened,” she said.
Flora said her brother was drunk and claims he was in the bathroom when the initial altercation happened.

Lugela, 19, is known to police. He was wanted on outstanding warrants when he was arrested, including possession of stolen property in connection with the theft of a vehicle.
Lugela’s family says they will support him through the court process.
“I will continue to pray the reality, the truth, will come out. Whoever did it will come out,” Flora said. She also expressed condolences for the Hicks family.
“I’m sorry for their loss,” she said breaking down.
The case was adjourned Friday as defence waits for disclosure.
A bail hearing is expected to be scheduled in the coming weeks.
The case has been put over until Nov. 4.
Lugela remains in custody.
