On Wednesday night, an inmate at the Calgary Remand Centre was charged with the murder of fellow inmate Alvin Chiniquay.
Marlon Rex Ledesma has been formally charged with first-degree murder in connection with the attack.
Chiniquay, 40, was on suicide watch when sources say he was attacked by a fellow inmate Sept. 9.
It’s believed Chiniquay was arrested for shoplifting just days before the attack.
Sources told Global News he was in a cell with a known violent criminal when the unprovoked attack happened.
He was kept on life support for more than ten days, before he passed away last week.

Ledesma has a long criminal history, including violent offences.
His mother Cherry Ledesma was the victim of murder, she was killed by her husband Gregory Houle in Nov. 2011.

Alvin Chiniquay’s family told Global News he was not violent and can’t comprehend why he was attacked.
His family said he has had a rough life. His mother died when he was just ten-years-old. From that moment on, his life was never the same. He struggled with addictions and got into a vicious cycle of petty crime to support his habits.
Alberta’s Justice and Solicitor General told Global News Thursday a board of inquiry has been assigned to investigate the circumstances surrounding the assault.
Sources said the entire incident was caught on CCTV surveillance video.

Ledesma’s next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 6.
