Winnipeg police recover missing Taser

WINNIPEG — Winnipeg police say they found the Taser that an officer lost — and they’ve arrested a 19-year-old they say took it three weeks earlier.

The Taser was stolen during an altercation with officers on Sept. 3 in the area of Rorie Street and Bannatyne Avenue.

According to police, two officers were confronted by a large crowd of around 100 people as they tried to help a man who had been stabbed. Police say one of the officers took out their Taser.

“Other people’s safety was put at risk and certainly our own members were put at risk during that altercation and ultimately assisting this individual who was in dire need of medical treatment,” said Winnipeg Police Service Constable Jason Michalyshen.

During the struggle with the crowd, the officer dropped the Taser and it went missing from there.

Police were called to the same area on Sept. 24 after getting reports that a man was threatening people with a Taser outside a bar.

Zekariyas Sirak was arrested later that day after officers tracked him to an area near Donald Street and River Avenue.

Police say he activated the Taser but the device didn’t make contact with anyone.

Sirak is facing a number of charges including carrying a concealed weapon and theft.
