Chemical leak at U of S Western College of Veterinary Medicine building

A chemical spill led to the evacuation of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine building at the University of Saskatchewan (U of S) on Thursday.

At around 2:10 p.m. CT, the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) were called to a commercial fire signal at campus.

Evacuation of the building was verified and a safe area established.

Upon further investigation, the fire department learned that the system had been activated due to a steam leak. SFD said the steam may have contained small amounts of potassium hydroxide and ammonia.

Working in conjunction with the U of S staff, the Hazmat crew entered the area with protective gear to determine the severity of the leak.

The leak turned out to minor and was contained to one room. The product in the area involved dissipated with detector readings showing at the zero level.

Workers on site ensured the ventilation system was functioning properly and the scene was turned over to university staff.

There were no injuries to people and all animals were unharmed as well. The Western College of Veterinary Medicine building has since reopened.
