WINNIPEG — A Winnipeg city councillor is calling for a traffic study to look at potential safety upgrades and congestion issues on Bishop Grandin Boulevard.
Councillor Brian Mayes made the proposal at a city hall infrastructure meeting Monday.
“As St. Vital’s gotten bigger and bigger and some of the areas to the east of my ward like Sage Creek for example, there’s more and more traffic volumes,” said Mayes.
He said the study will focus on ways to improve traffic flow and reduce collisions as residential development continues to increase the number of vehicles on Bishop Grandin Boulevard.
“It would be hundreds of millions to build overpasses so I don’t think there’s money for that but are there other, cheaper alternatives that we can do,” he said.
Several intersections along the road have placed high on lists released by MPI, which detail where collisions happen most frequently in Winnipeg.

MPI, Winnipeg police and CAA Manitoba kicked off a two-year program featuring more police enforcement and signage to raise awareness about danger at Bishop Grandin Boulevard and St. Mary’s Road earlier this year.
