Winnipeg Blue Bombers make six roster changes as Drew Willy returns

File / Global News

WINNIPEG – Despite missing the second half of the Banjo Bowl and not practicing all week, Winnipeg Blue Bombers running back Andrew Harris could still play on Saturday against the Toronto Argonauts. Harris is on the active roster and will be a game time decision.

“Tomorrow I’m going to come in early and test it out,” said Harris. “It feels OK now but we’ll see what happens.”

If Harris can’t suit up the Bombers have placed Timothy Flanders on the roster as insurance. Flanders has been on the practice roster since way back in week three and hasn’t touched the football in a game situation since the pre-season.

“I really don’t know if Andrew’s going to play or not. If he does or he doesn’t I’ll be ready to go,” said Flanders. “As a competitor you always want to play but we’ll see how it goes. I’m ready for the opportunity.”

While Harris’ status is still undecided, linebacker Ian Wild will definitely be sitting out. Tony Burnett will start in his place at linebacker after he made a number of big plays while filling in for Wild against the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

“Unbelievable athlete, right,” said head coach Mike O’Shea. “What you notice about Tony from last year, even this year, he just seems to make plays.”

Another change sees Chris Randle return from injury. He’ll be back in the lineup for the first time since July and he’ll start at cornerback with Terrence Frederick coming off the active roster.

“We expect Chris Randle to return to that all-star caliber form that he’s played at before.”

Newcomers Kevin Glenn and TJ Heath are both on the Bombers’ 46-man roster but Heath is listed as a backup and will probably be one of their two healthy scratches. Defensive tackle Jake Thomas returns after a two game absence and Shayne Gauthier is also on the roster.

Less than a week after getting traded Drew Willy returns to his old stomping grounds but will only dress as the Argos third string QB.

“There might be some emotions tomorrow but I’ll get over that quickly,” said Willy. “Saw a tonne of my teammates last night at Earl’s anyway, so did see most of them already and get that part of it done with so we can go out there and compete.”

The Bombers go for a seventh straight victory against the Argos on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. at Investors Group Field.
