WINNIPEG – The Wichita Wingnuts’ bats awoke in game two of the American Association championship series.
After getting shutout in the series opener the Wingnuts pounded out 16 hits in a 9-2 victory over the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Thursday at Shaw Park.
The Goldeyes have relied heavily on their pitching staff in the playoffs, but the Wingnuts had a tonne of success against Goldeyes starter Kevin McGovern. He lasted just 5.1 innings and gave up five earned runs on eight hits.
The Wingnuts scored runs in six different innings. Matt Chavez hit a solo home run in the second inning to start the run scoring parade. Chavez finished the night five for five at the plate. He also had two runs batted in and scored three runs. Nick Van Stratten had three RBI in the game two victory for Wichita.

Willie Cabrera and Casio Grider drove in the only two runs for Winnipeg.
The best of five championship series is now tied at one game apiece. The final three games of the series will all be played in Wichita. Friday is a travel day for both clubs with game three scheduled for Saturday night. Mikey O’Brien will be on the mound for the Fish. Game 4 will be played Sunday evening and a game 5, if necessary, is set for Monday.
