Edmonton house explosion sends 2 to hospital

WATCH ABOVE: Police officers and fire crews were called to a south Edmonton home Tuesday evening for reports of "a house explosion." Police said two people inside the home were rushed to hospital and that an investigation into what caused the blast was ongoing. Insp. Gary Godziuk with the Edmonton Police Service spoke with reporters at the scene.

Edmonton police confirmed they were investigating what led to an explosion at a home in the city’s south side Tuesday afternoon that sent two men to hospital.

According to police, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services were called to a home near 58th Street and 18th Avenue S.W. at 5:18 p.m. to respond to a “call of a house explosion.” Police officers were called to respond 30 minutes later.

“I can confirm that two people have been taken to the hospital that were inside the residence,” Insp. Gary Godziuk with the Edmonton Police Service said. “One is in serious condition, one is in stable condition.”

Police later said neither man’s injuries are life-threatening.

A Global News crew at the scene said the damage to the home was visible and it appeared one of the walls of the home involved in the blast had buckled.

Godziuk said it was too early to say whether there was anything criminal in nature connected to the explosion and added that police and fire crews would likely remain at the scene throughout the night.

While he said there was no general concern for the neighbourhood, a couple of houses had been evacuated as a precaution.

“The two houses that are adjacent to this house…because this house has been deemed structurally unsound as a result of the explosion, those houses have been evacuated.”

Police also said a one-block radius around the scene had been blocked off as a precaution.

Anyone with information about the explosion is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Tips can also be anonymously submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online.
