Man walking on Alberta highway hit by SUV, airlifted to hospital

Alberta RCMP closed down Highway 43 near Township Road 533 Sunday morning after a man was hit by a “small SUV.”

Police said emergency crews were called to the scene just after 7 a.m.

“A male walking in the southbound lane was struck by a small SUV,” Stony Plain RCMP said in a statement.

The pedestrian was taken to hospital in critical condition by STARS Air Ambulance. The SUV driver was not injured.

RCMP said southbound traffic on Highway 43 in the area was rerouted for about three hours while the investigation took place. It was reopened at about 10 a.m.

Sgt. John Spaans said the investigation is likely to continue through Sunday evening.

“It is unclear why he was walking on the highway but alcohol has been ruled out,” Spaans wrote in an email to Global News.
