The federal government is giving $35.3 million to the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s (AAFC) Swift Current Research and Development Centre, the agriculture minister announced Wednesday.
Lawrence MacAulay, minister of Agriculture and Agri-food, said the money will go to infrastructure improvements, including renovations for energy efficiency and new labs.
“Improvements to these facilities will help AAFC deliver new technologies to producers, which creates growth, supports Canadian farmers and makes our sector more competitive,” MacAulay said in a statement.
The improvements will be used for the centre’s wheat breeding program and other forages and cereals research.
The AAFC helps to develop wheat varieties, which are grown on around 50 per cent of wheat acreages in Canada.
