Severe weather possible east of Calgary: Environment Canada

WATCH ABOVE: An afternoon thunderstorm rolled through Calgary Friday, with heavy rains and some hail – Sep 2, 2016

Environment Canada has issued a number of severe thunderstorm watches in southern Alberta to kick off the final long weekend of summer.

The watches were issued Friday because conditions were favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms for counties directly east of Calgary

All watches directly east of Calgary were lifted after 6:00 p.m. and watches were activated along the Alberta/Saskatchewan border from Lac Le Biche to Oyen.

Severe thunderstorms can bring strong wind gusts, heavy rain and large hail.

A watch is issued when potentially dangerous weather is possible. Watches will be upgraded to warnings once severe weather is imminent or occurring.
