The Swift Current Indians baseball club will be changing its name for the 2017 season in an effort to be more culturally sensitive.
The club’s board of directors has been considering a name change for the baseball team since 2015 but has now formally announced their intentions to the public.
“The new direction in creating a new nickname allows for us re-brand our product and promote the team in a more current and sensitive manner,” long-time Swift Current Indians team member Harv Martinez said in a statement.

“The organization has put considerable thought into the decision and we believe it’s the right thing to do at this time.”
The new team name will be chosen ahead of the Annual General Meeting in November.
The Swift Current Indians are part of the Western Major Baseball League.
