Bear Creek wildfire now 75 per cent contained – Aug 23, 2016

NEAR WEST KELOWNA – Crews continue to tighten containment lines around the Bear Creek wildfire.

The latest estimate puts containment at 75 per cent.

Despite the progress, an evacuation order remains in effect for 105 properties in the Traders Cove subdivision and nearby Bear Creek Provincial Park as the fire remains active through-out an approximate 53 hectare area.

There is no electrical service in the evacuation zone.

Power poles need to be replaced and lines restrung.

A further 65 properties are under an evacuation alert.

Residents should be prepared to leave on short notice.

Westside road is still closed to traffic through the fire area, but this could change Wednesday.

More than 350 people have registered at the Emergency Support Services Reception Centre at the Lions Hall at 2466 Main Street in West Kelowna.

More than 50 firefighters are tackling the blaze with the assistance of heavy equipment.
