‘Homeland’ wins the Emmy Award for best drama, breaking stranglehold held by ‘Mad Men’

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – “Homeland” wins the Emmy Award for best drama, breaking the stranglehold in the category held by “Mad Men.”

“Mad Men” was seeking its record fifth straight Emmy, but was beaten by the Showtime drama starring Claire Danes as a CIA agent and Damian Lewis as her investigation target.

Other nominees included PBS’ “Downton Abbey,” which changed categories after winning as best miniseries last year, “Breaking Bad” of AMC, “Game of Thrones” on HBO and “Boardwalk Empire” of HBO.

The 64th Primetime Emmys are airing live from the Nokia Theatre L.A., with Jimmy Kimmel as host.
