Officers were initially called about an aggressive man near 106 Street and 47 Avenue at 9:45 p.m.

Police said the man, whose name has not been released, appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

According to an EPS news release, “police believe the male consumed a quantity of pills and threw the bottle from the balcony.”

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) said police went into the home to arrest the man and he went into medical distress “during the arrest.”

Police said the man was put in a recovery position.

EMS treated the man and took him to hospital, where he died.

Now that ASIRT has taken over the investigation, Edmonton police won’t comment further.

ASIRT said the man was related to the owner of the home and known to the person who called police.
