Edmonton police confirmed the owner of Urban Kidz Child Care, a north side daycare in Beverly Heights, has been charged with aggravated assault and assault involving two children.
Uzma Nasim, 34, was arrested and charged on Aug. 14.
Police did not provide details about the nature of the assault, but said their investigation began after receiving a report of physical abuse from Child Care Licensing.
Edmonton police said the children were both under the age of five. Officers said the kids did not sustain any physical injuries and it’s believed “this was an isolated incident and there are no other complainants,” EPS said in a news release.
Nasim spoke to Global News Wednesday and said she opened the licensed daycare in May and cares for approximately two dozen children between the ages of one and 12. According to Nasim, she has “never had any problems” and is a mother of two young boys herself.
Naism said the allegations were made by two disgruntled employees she hired last month.
She said they accused her of slapping a child in the face and of putting a blanket over a baby girl’s face to get her to stop crying and that they allege the incidents took place in July. Nasim denied both of the allegations and said there is “no proof” either incident occurred.
The owner said the daycare continues to operate but that she is not allowed near it.
Urban Kidz is a licensed daycare which means it follows a provincial standard and is subject to regular inspections.
