Sask. man charged with arson after five weekend fires in and around Melville

RCMP have arrested a 44-year-old man in connection with five arson fires in the Melville, Sask. area.

On Aug. 13 at around 8:45 p.m., Melville RCMP were called to a report of a firearm discharged at a residence on the 600 block of 4th Avenue West in Melville, Sask.

Police later received information that the home was also on fire.

After investigating, police determined no one was inside the residence.

RCMP were also called to four other structure fires over the next several hours, including a fire at a residence on the 800 block of Scotia Street in Melville that caused minor damage.

Three of the other fires were at rural properties. Those fires caused a barn, a shed, grain bins and an abandoned home to be significantly damaged.

Police say no one was inside any of the structures during the fires and no one was injured.

Michael Hahn, 44, was arrested in Melville early Sunday morning. He faces five counts of arson, as well as firearm and break and enter charges.

Hahn appeared in Melville provincial court Monday morning. He will make his next provincial court appearance on Aug. 18.

RCMP are still investigating the fires.
