Dozens of children and youth spent Sunday playing and learning about the sport of Rugby.
Hosted by the Rookie Rugby program and Saskatchewan Rugby, children, ages 4-18 got a chance to learn the basics of the game. There was no tackling allowed, instead, youth wore flag belts to score tries.
Participants were put through numerous drill sessions, running exercises and scrimmages.
The rugby camp was an opportunity for youth of all ages to get a better understanding of the game.
Rugby is now an official competitive sport of the Olympics, and organizers said it helps validate the game.
“It’s great with it being in the Olympics, because girls see that girls can play these sports. Boys can get to know the sport,” rookie rugby leader Julie Foster said.
Organizers are hoping the rugby camp will inspire the youngsters, paving the way for them to maybe become future Olympians.
