Rio 2016: What’s on tap for Team Canada on Day 1 of the Rio Games

The first full day of competition at the Rio Olympics gets underway Saturday with a slew of events. Here’s a few sports to watch as Team Canada enters Day 1.

BASKETBALL: Team Canada takes on China in women’s basketball preliminary Group B action. (1:15 p.m. ET)

SWIMMING: Both men’s and women’s swimming events begin Saturday afternoon with medal hopefuls Emily Overholt and Ryan Cochrane looking to strike gold early. Events begin at 12:30 p.m. ET. Medals in the Men’s 400m individual medley, men’s 400m freestyle, women’s 400m individual medley and women’s 4 x 100m freestyle relay begin around 9 p.m. ET.

SOCCER: Women’s soccer is back in action as Canada faces Zimbabwe in Group F action. Canada blanked Australia 2-0 on Wednesday.

TENNIS: Eugenie Bouchard makes her Olympic debut when she takes the court to face American Sloane Stephens in the first round of women’s singles action at 2:30 p.m. In men’s singles, Vasek Pospisil faces off against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France just before 10 a.m. ET.

RUGBY SEVENS: Rugby sevens makes its debut as Team Canada faces off against Japan in women’s Pool C action at 11:30 a.m. and against Brazil at 4:30 p.m. ET.
