Third contender running for leader of Saskatchewan NDP

Add another name to the list of contenders seeking to become the next leader of the Saskatchewan New Democrats. 

Saskatoon physician Ryan Meili announced Friday he is a candidate in next spring’s leadership election. 

“I am running for leader of the Saskatchewan New Democratic Party because it is not enough to simply treat the symptoms of political failure,” said Meili.

“We owe it to the people of Saskatchewan to do better. 

Meili is the third person running to replace interim leader John Nilson. 

Last week, Saskatoon MLA Cam Broten and economist Erin Weir announced their candidacy. 

It is expected Regina MLA Trent Wotherspoon will announce today he is running. 

Meili previously ran for leader in 2009, finishing second to Dwain Lingenfelter with 45 per cent of the vote.

Lingenfelter resigned as party leader following the 2011 provincial election when the NDP was reduced to nine seats and he failed to win his seat. 

The NDP will choose a new leader on March 9, 2013 in Saskatoon.
