A Truro, N.S. RCMP officer has been charged with stealing and trafficking cocaine that was taken from an exhibit locker.

The investigation began in September 2015, when RCMP contacted the province’s Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) with allegations that a member of the RCMP had stolen 10 kg of cocaine from an exhibit locker in 2011 and replaced the drugs with another substance.

The drugs were scheduled to be destroyed and were no longer evidence in a court case.

It’s also alleged the RCMP member received “substantial proceeds” from the sale of the cocaine by other people.

In a news release,  SiRT said it had laid charges of theft of cocaine, trafficking cocaine, breach of trust, and laundering proceeds of crime against Staff Sgt. Craig Robert Burnett.

Burnett works at the RCMP Operational Communications Centre (OCC) in Truro.

SiRT says the investigation was carried out under their oversight by RCMP members from Nova Scotia, British Columbia, Alberta, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland.
