The City of Coquitlam is appealing to the public for help this morning to aid victims of a recent fire.
Ten Syrian families were forced out of their homes at a complex on Cottonwood Avenue last week.
Now Mayor Richard Stewart is asking those with basement suites or empty rooms to help house these families while they wait for new accommodations to become available.
The 50 Syrian refugees have only been in Canada for about six months and came from war-torn Aleppo. Some of them have now lost everything they brought with them.
They had previously been put up in a hotel.
The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time.
The Coquitlam Foundation also has an account set up to help displaced persons in Coquitlam due to situations such as a major fires. Donations to support those displaced by the Cottonwood fire can be made at the following link: Cottonwood Fire Support
Donors are asked to click on the “Donate Now” button in the lower right section of the page select the “General Fund” in the drop down box and reference “Cottonwood Fire” in the message section. Tax receipts will be issued. The Foundation will oversee disbursement to those impacted by the fire.
