Severe thunderstorm warnings dropped for Calgary

A severe thunderstorm warning issued for Calgary on Tuesday evening was dropped less than an hour later.

Environment Canada originally issued the warning at around 8:45 p.m., saying meteorologists had been tracking a cluster of severe thunderstorms capable of producing very strong wind gusts, up to nickel-sized hail and heavy rain.

Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce large hail, damaging winds or torrential rainfall.

The warning was dropped at about 9:30 p.m. A thunderstorm watch which had been issued at around 11:45 a.m. was later dropped just after 2 a.m. on Wednesday.
