WINNIPEG — All over her house are trinkets Jane Edstrom has collected from high profile track and field competitions.

They’re memories from meets that won’t rival the Winnipegger’s next trip.

“I had to look at the list two or three times before it really sunk in,” said Edstrom.

Edstrom was selected to supervise athletics at next month’s Games. She’s an International Technical Official – the highest certification for a judge in track and field. Edstrom is one of ten assigned to the Olympics and the only Canadian going.

“One day, I may be doing pole volt,” said Edstrom. “That night, I may be at the start line of the 100-metre race. Triple jump, long jump, shot put, discus, hammer. We have to know them all.”

Edstrom has been officiating for 36 years. A long career completely volunteered. Track officials don’t get paid but instead do it for the passion.

“It’s a responsibility because we have to be focused and on our game,” said Edstrom.

She will be rewarded in Rio though with a front seat to history.
