A woman is recovering in hospital after suffering a serious though non-life threatening injury when she encountered a bear in the Canmore-area Wednesday evening.
Alberta Health Services said paramedics were called to the Lowline Trail around 7:30 p.m. where they responded to an injured woman believed to be in her 20s.
The woman told paramedics she and her friend were biking in the area when they encountered a bear. She said they tried to ride away but the bear struck her.

The victim’s friend, who was not hurt, used her bear spray which prompted the bear to leave.
According to the victim, the pair then rode their bikes further from where the encounter occurred and called for help.
The victim was taken to Canmore General Hospital where AHS said she was recovering from a serious soft-tissue injury to her upper torso which resulted in an internal injury.

She was considered to be in stable condition.
AHS said it’s believed the two cyclists encountered a brown bear.
